Cement steps up the hill, after three months carrying sand

A photograph of the work at Amaralingeshwara Kona, 4 October 2021.

The path was uneven stone and people slipped on it. I wanted to put cement steps in. I had no money, no help and no experience, and I started anyway.

This is where we stored the sandbags.
This is where we stored the sandbags.

Getting the sand up was the first hard part. Two hundred bags, half a kilometre into the forest, and it took three months. Some days I carried it alone. Some days I brought it up on the bike. One day I came off the bike and had to pick myself up, because there was nobody there to help me. There was no road then, only rock and a walking path full of stones, and a bike wheel could barely take it. It was painful, and it was a hard test.

Building it was the second hard part, because I did not know how to build anything out of rock. I struggled two or three days before we got it standing. Then the rocks went in over three days and the cement over two more, and we painted it and watered it.

From my own archive

Before the Work (2021) - The temple path was dangerous—uneven stones made it hard to climb, and people often slipped and fell.
Carrying Sand Bags - We carried 200 sand bags half a kilometer into the forest. Sometimes, I even used my bike to transport them. It took three months to move everything
Building the Steps - With no experience, I trusted Nana (Lord Shiva). In three days, we set the rocks, and in two more days, we laid the cement.

That is Shiva's grace. He walked me through it and he taught me all of it.

If any of this is something you can help with, or you think I have got it wrong, write and tell me. I read them all myself.
