Kamakshi Amma, from six feet below the ground to a shrine

The first day of work on the Kamakshi Amma site.
The first day here.

I did not plan this one either. It came the way the Lingam came, over months, as something I could not put down, and when we asked Shiva the answer was not ambiguous.

Filling six feet of ground

25–30 July 2024

The pit before it was filled, six to seven feet deep.
Six or seven feet down.

The ground was six or seven feet below where it needed to be, so it was the same work again. Stone carried in and packed until the level came up, then red soil dug out and spread over it. Three months.

A hole that deep needs stone bigger than anything you can carry to it, so we climbed the hill above and threw it down from the height.

14 October – 10 November 2024

The pit completely filled with rock and sand.
Filled, all of it.
Him beside the rice bags and sandbags carried in for the work.
The bags, carried in.
The holes dug for the iron pillars.

The iron pipes going in at the Kamakshi Amma shrine.
Putting the pipes in.

The only time she sleeps.

Carrying the things for the homam to the temple the next day.
Carrying up what the homam needed.
The same carrying, further along.
The same, further on.
The people there on the day of Kamakshi Amma.
On her day.

The iron, and the footings in rock

Then the iron. The pipes came in on our shoulders, and as far up as an auto could get them. We dug the holes deep and poured concrete. That site is solid rock, so the footings were the worst of it and took far more concrete than they should have. The cement, the water, the sand, all of it came in by hand and was mixed on the spot. Then the roof, and steps up so people could reach her.

From my own archive

The site before the work and after it.
Before and after.
Another before and after of the same ground.
The same, again.
The iron pillars and the shed going up.
The pillars and the shed.
The place in 2023 with neither shrine on it, beside the same place in 2024.
2023, and 2024.

Then we brought her

Then we brought her.
